2.0.0 – 2.1.0 Training and Apprenticeship

• Pay for electricians is close to the top of the scale
for all construction occupations.

• The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Office of
Apprenticeship sets the minimum standards for
training programs across the country.

• An electrical apprenticeship typically requires four
years of training, including 576 classroom hours and
8,000 hours of OJL.

• A record of each trainee’s progress is maintained in
a Registry System.

2.2.0 – 2.2.3 Types of Training

• In a competency-based program, it may be possible
to shorten this time by testing out of specific tasks
through a series of performance exams.

• In a traditional program, the required OJL may be
acquired in increments of 2,000 hours per year.

• NCCER training is competency-based, which means
that the trainee must demonstrate the skills
presented in each module of training.
