Passive voice merupakan bentuk gramatikal (grammatical construction) dimana subjek pada kalimat tidak melakukan suatu aksi, melainkan sebagai receiver of action atau menerima aksi. Aksi disini ditindaklanjuti oleh agent lain atau sebagai pelaku aksi yang dapat disebutkan ataupun tidak. Hal ini berbeda pada bentuk kalimat active, dimana subjek berhubungan secara langsung dengan verb (kata kerja) dengan bertindak sebagai pelaku aksi.

1. The crab was eaten by the woman (Kepiting dimakan oleh wanita itu)
2. The dirty shoes were washed by me (Sepatu kotor dicuci oleh saya)
Active Voice (Kalimat Aktif)
1. The woman ate the crab (Wanita itu memakan kepiting)
