What is Transcription?

TRANSCRIPTION is converting a DNA sequence to RNA

9

media

What is the purpose of Transcription?

Since the DNA cannot leave the nucleus, the sequence is rewritten into messenger RNA through the process of TRANSCRIPTION so the information can be brought to the ribosomes for translation into proteins.

10

What are the events that take place during DNA TRANSCRIPTION?

media

11

TRANSCRIPTION Events

  • Initiation

  • Elongation

  • Termination

12

INITIATION

  • Transcription factor recognise the promoter region or TATA box & bind to the promoter.

  • RNA polymerase binds to transcription factor (at promoter) to create Transcription Initiation Complex.

  • RNA polymerase then starts transcription.

media

13

ELONGATION

  • RNA polymerase adds RNA nucleotides to the 3' end of the growing RNA molecule as it continues along the double helix.

  • The new RNA molecule peels away from its DNA template & the DNA double helix reforms.

media

14

TERMINATION

  • The RNA polymerase continue to transcribing for hundreds of nucleotide past the terminator sequence, AAUAAA.

  • At a point about 10 to 35 nucleotide past this sequence ( AAUAAA), the pre-mRNA is cut from the RNA polymerase.
