1. It has a developmental purpose:
> It can help students learn more effectively

2. It can show students how their work can be improved/maintained

3. It is used to assess the extent to which they have met the assessment criteria
> Are students achieving the learning outcomes of the module?

Understanding feedback through categorising

In order to understand your feedback, try to divide it into the following categories:

> Argumentation (your answer to the brief, use of evidence for support, use of reading, use of references) (i.e. higher order issues).

> Structure (essay-, paragraph-, and sentence-level) (i.e. higher order issues).

> Language (i.e. lower order issues).

" Although using these three categories is useful, it is important to note that mistakes/problems in ONE CATEGORY can affect your writing in a variety of different ways. In other words, there are certain points that extend across two or even all three categories. "
