Vocabulario

The major subjects (las materias) tend to be plural in Spanish.

las ciencias (Science)
las matemáticas (Math)
los idiomas, las lenguas (Languages)
las sciencias sociales (Social Studies). 

Remember to treat them as plural, even though not all of them are plural in English.

el francés (French)
el inglés (English). 

These words are also nationalities (adjectives), but if you want to use them as a language, they are nouns.  They are all masculine.

obligatorio (required) electivo / opcional (elective).

Gramática

To put words together to make phrases, you need to remember 2 simple rules:

1.  to connect 2 nouns together, use "de"

      Example:  un curso de química = a Chemistry course

2.  to connect a noun and descriptive adjective, the noun comes first

      Example:  mi clase favorita = my favorite class
