Importance of the Harlem Renaissance in History: Between 1918- mid to late
1930’s an explosion of African American music, art and literature in Harlem, New
York.

Poem’s structure

Techniques- Literary devices in poetry: figurative language

Repetition- repeat

Stanza- how a poem is divided into two or more lines

Couplet-a pair of lines in a poem that are grouped together

Rhyming couplet- a pair of lines in a poem that rhyme

Metaphor- Comparing two things not using like or as

Simile comparing two things using like or as

Allusion- a reference to something outside of the poem

Connotation - implied meanings and emotions of the text.

Structure- The way a poem is organized

Theme: the message or lesson the author wants you to
take away from the work

How to figure out the theme or “message” of the poem:

1) Read the poem.

2) Look for words that are repeated or emphasized in the poem.

3) Reread the poem to go back and look at how the stanzas, couplets or sections
of the poem are put together or separated.

4) Look back at the title of the poem and what is the language the author is
using trying to get across to the reader.
