Organization is “the internal structure of a piece
of writing, the thread of central meaning, the
pattern and the sequence…”(Education
Northwest, “What are the Traits”, 2012).
Chronological/Sequential Order is when the
set of events/steps in a process are presented in
the order in which they happened.
Chronological Order is especially useful to
develop ideas in:
●Historical texts describing a particular
event/series of events.
●Scientific texts that explain steps in a process
/procedure(ie. To explain how a species evolves).

Purpose for reading: To understand why chronological order is important.
As you read “ High Fliers”, think about and discuss the following with a
partner:
●Is the whole text or only part chronological? How can you tell?
●How do the text features add to or detract from the text structure? How
do they help develop the author’s central idea?
●Why is it important to that this text is written in chronological order?
How does it help in the development of the central idea?
●What are some weather topics that might be best written about in
chronological order?

Purpose for reading: To understand why chronological
order is important.
● As a class, we will decide and highlight the top six
events of the topic.
● As a class, we will go over the writing prompt and
then you will complete it on your own.

Independent Reading Focus
●
Look through the book bins, SORA and online to find a text about a
specific weather event about your weather topic that happened in the
past (ie. Hurricane Katrina)
●
Get a Chronological Order organizer on paper or in This Week’s
assignments.
●
Read your book/text silently.
●
Talk with your topic partner about the event and how it fits into
chronological order.
●
Be ready to share out.
