Part 1:Alexander miles was born in pick away county,Ohio,in 1838, the son of Michael and Mary miles. Miles grow up in Ohio, but moved to Waukesha Wisconsin, where he made a living as a barber,then he moved Winona, Minnesota where he met and married Mrs. Candace J. Dunlap. It is believed that Alexander git the idea for his elevator door mechanism after his daughter accidentally fell down a shaft and almost took her life.

Their daughters Grace was born in 1876, after her birth the family related to Duluth Minnesota. Alexander became the first Black member of the Duluth chamber of commerce and operated a barber shop out of the St Louis hotel.
