6

Photosynthesis Recap

  • The main purpose of photosynthesis is for plants to convert LIGHT energy into CHEMICAL energy

  • This chemical energy is GLUCOSE (sugar)

  • Glucose is stored in plants. When you eat plants, you get glucose!

media

7

The Problem

  • Glucose is great for storing energy, but it's TOO BIG for quick cell jobs

  • This is like using a $50 in a vending machine to buy a $1 snack and not getting $49 back in change

  • How do we turn GLUCOSE into SMALLER energy molecules?

media

8

A process called CELLULAR RESPIRATION is the solution!

What is Cellular Respiration?

  • Process performed by autotrophs and heterotrophs to create ATP

  • The main purpose of cellular respiration is to produce ATP

  • Takes in Glucose and oxygen

  • Produces CO2, H2O, and ATP

  • Aerobic / Anaerobic

  • Aerobic takes place inside the mitochondria

  • Anaerobic takes place in the cytoplasm

12

18

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are a CYCLE

  • Notice that some molecules are constantly recycled between the two processes

  • What photosynthesis produces, cellular respiration requires

  • Let's compare the two processes
