The Fall of Rome is considered to be the start of the Medieval Age.

Feudal System

Whilst controlling, the feudal system did give people a purpose and a relative degree of safety.
Compared to being isolated and without any support it was better than the alternative.

Inside the system, everyone had a rank and certain duties that they had to carry out to help others and ensure that the system worked.

Feudal Advantages and Disadvantages

Everyone in the system had access to enough food and clothing to survive, as well as being protected by knights and other soldiers (men-at-arms) and a place to flee to when needed (castles).
In exchange for these benefits people lost certain rights.
Peasants had to give up large portions of their crops as taxes, they could not move freely from town to town as they needed their lords permission and were considered his property and not free people.
