Types of Flooding

The most common type of flooding is when rivers or streams
overflow their banks. These floods are called riverine floods.
Heavy rain, a broken dam, rapid ice melt in the mountains, or
even a beaver dam in a vulnerable spot can overwhelm a river
and send it spreading over nearby land. The land surrounding a river is called a flood plain.

Coastal flooding, also called estuarine flooding, happens when

a large storm or tsunami causes the sea to rush inland.

6

Reorder

How does flooding happen? Put the boxes in order of when they happen:

It is raining heavily

The discharge of the river increases

The river starts to fill up

The water level in the river is so high that water moves into the floodplain

The river can't hold anymore water and the surrounding area floods

Match

Match the Following

Urbanisation

Steep Slopes

Deforestation

Very Dry Soil

Impermeable Rocks

The concrete in cities is impermeable

The water moves too fast to soak up

Trees absorb a lot of the water

A crust is formed so water can't soak

They can't absorb water
