Quick Recap
Investigation Discussion: A Tale
of Two Mountains
Instruction: Weathering and
Erosion
Investigation Discussion:
Volcanoes
Collect Evidence C
Objective: Students will be able to
distinguish between older and
younger mountain ranges and
understand how volcanoes form
and change Earth’s surface.
Standards:MS-ESS2-1. Develop a model to
describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the
flow of energy that drives this process
MS-ESS2-3: Analyze and interpret data on the
distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes,
and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the
past plate motions.
3
Recap: Plate Boundaries (p49)
Convergent Boundary:
The boundary between
two tectonic plates that
move towards each
other.
Word Roots:
Con: with/together
Verge: move
4
Recap: Plate Boundaries (p49)
Divergent Boundary: The
boundary between two
tectonic plates that move
apart from each other.
Word Roots:
Di: apart
Verge: move
5
Recap: Plate Boundaries (p49)
Transform Boundary: The
boundary between two
tectonic plates that slide
past each other.
Word Roots:
Trans: across
Form: shape
6
Recap: How Mountains are Formed
Fold mountains are created by
the compression forces caused
by two converging continental
plates.
The denser plate subducts
under the less dense plate and
pushes part of the less dense
plate upwards.
7
Investigation: A Tale of Two Mountain
Ranges (p. 55)
Rocky Mountain Range
Appalachian Mountain Range
8
Investigation: A Tale of Two Mountain
Ranges (p. 55)
With your group, discuss and answer the following questions:
1.How do the shapes of the mountain ranges compare?
2.
Which mountain range do you think is older? Why?
Sentence Frames:
I think that… is … while …. Is…
The Rocky mountain range is… while the Appalachian mountain range is…
I think the_____ mountain range is … and the____ mountain range is … because…
9
Weathering and Erosion
Weathering: the process in which
rocks and soil are broken down to
create sediment
The Main Idea:
As time progresses, weathering and erosion carve mountains to make
them smaller and smoother.
Erosion: the process where water
and wind transports sediment from
one place to another.
10
Poll
Now that you know these two processes, which mountain range is older? Appalachian or Rockies?
Appalachian
Rockies
11
Poll
Has your answer changed?
YES
NO
12
What if it were a volcano?
Would weathering and erosion
still happen?
13
Investigation: Take Cover
1.Observe demonstration and Record your observations.
With your group, discuss and answer the following:
2. What happened when the baking soda was added to the vinegar?
How were the different-sized beads erupted?
3. How do you think volcanoes change the Earth’s surface?
Sentence Frames:
The larger beads were… while the smaller beads were…
I think that volcanoes change the Earth’s surface by…[your reasoning/thoughts]
When the baking soda was added to the vinegar…[stuff that happened]
14
Volcanoes
Volcanoes can shape the earth’s
surface by:
Forming large mountains
Creating new crust
Destroying nearby areas by
erupting
Nevado Ojos del Salado, Chile
Eruption at mid-ocean
ridge
Eruption of Mt. St. Helens, Washington (1980)
15
Volcanoes: Under the Ocean
Recall: Mid ocean ridges are places where new oceanic crust is formed through volcanic activity. They are caused by magma rising from convection currents.
Eruption at mid-ocean ridge
16
17
Volcanoes: In the Ocean
Volcanoes are formed in the ocean
when two Oceanic Plates converge
Recall:
The oceanic plate is denser so it
subducts below the continental plate.
Mt. St.
Augustine,
Alaska
