Small Loan, Big Effect

A young woman in a small village in Nepal wanted to start a tailor shop to make and sell

clothes. She did not have enough money, however, to get started, and it was impossible for

her to obtain a loan from a big bank. Knowing she could never get the money from them,

she applied for a microloan.

3

A microloan is a loan of a small amount of money to a person or group. Some microloans are made by banks or large organizations, while others are made by individuals. Microloans can go a long way in changing people's lives for the better. For example, with a

With a little loan of 25 dollars, the tailor in Nepal can buy the material needed to make her clothing. She can sell the clothes and make enough money to buy more material and evem make enough to buy a sewing machine to make even more clothes. Then her business can really take off!

4

Microloans are made to people in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and South America, who don’t have access to banks. The loans are becoming increasingly popular.

The World Bank believes that 160 million people around the world are now benefiting from microloans. Not all of these loans are used to start businesses. Some help families send their children to school or allow them to take classes to learn new skills. Others help farmers pay for seed so that their harvests will be bigger and earn the farmers more money.

5

For some people, the loans have a great effect. A carpenter in Afghanistan named Behnam received a $465 microloan. He used it to expand his carpentry business and eventually, he is able to provide more and better food and clothing for his four children. Lucas, living in Mozambique, used microloans to buy chickens and to irrigate his farmland. Now he can employ four people and send his children to school. Beatrice, living in Kenya, started with a microloan of less than 40 dollars. She used the money to buy vegetables, which she sold at local markets.

6

Microloans often help both the people in a community and the person who receives them. the loan. When a person’s business does well, it brings money into a community. This makes a noticeable difference and helps other businesses sell or do more. Often, people who get microloans will repeatedly apply for loans to improve their businesses, which may, in turn, help the community even more.

7

What about paying these loans back? The people who receive microloans are often very poor. Are they less likely to pay back the loan? Surprisingly, over ninety-seven percent of microloans are paid back! So, microloans are a very good way of helping people help themselves and doing it with little risk.
