Order of Operations

*WITH EXPONENTS*

  • Review Order of Operations

  • Review Powers of Ten

  • Learn about Exponents

  • Practice using Order of Operations to solve expressions that have exponents

In this lesson you will:

Reminder: Order of Operations

All expressions have to be solved in this order:

  1. Parenthesis (or any grouping symbols like [brackets] and {braces})

  2. Exponents

  3. Multiply or Divide: In order from Left -----> to Right

  4. Add or Subtract : In order from Left -----> to Right

Reminder: Powers of Ten

All Powers of Ten can be written with:

- A Base Number that is 10
- and an Exponent

media

8

What does the EXPONENT mean?

The Exponent tells us how many times
the base number is multiplied times itself.

media

10⁵ = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10

10⁵ = 100,000

9

Fill in the Blank

11

What if the base is not a 10?

We still use the EXPONENT to tell us how many times to multiply the base number times ITSELF.

Correct:
52 = 5 x 5
52 = 25

media

Incorrect:
52 = 5 x
