All expressions have to be solved in this order:

1. Parenthesis (or any grouping symbols like [brackets] and {braces})

2. Exponents

3. Multiply or Divide: In order from Left -----> to Right

4. Add or Subtract : In order from Left -----> to Right

We use PEMDAS to remember!

All Powers of Ten can be written with:

- A Base Number that is 10
- and an Exponent

What does the EXPONENT mean?

The Exponent tells us how many times
the base number is multiplied times itself.

​10⁵ = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10

10⁵ = 100,000

What if the base is not a 10?

We still use the EXPONENT to tell us how many times to multiply the base number times ITSELF.

Correct:
5² = 5 x 5
5² = 25

Incorrect:
5² = 5 x 2

Do you just multiply the base by the exponent? NO!

Incorrect:
5² ≠ 5 x 2
