1
We can use branching diagrams which show relationships between organisms to infer the traits of T.rex, and possibly what it tastes like.
What did T.Rex taste like?
2
Life is very _________,
yet all things are related.
Branching diagrams show how living things are related to each other.
Eukaryota, Bacteria, Archaea.
You fall into one of these three groups!
There are 3 main domains or groups of life:
3
Explore
each of the three Domains of Life.
How would you describe each domain?
What are some examples of life from each domain?
What distinguishes Eukaryota from Bacteria and Archaea?
4
Multiple Choice
Archaea have a similarity to Bacteria in that they are both _______ celled.
However Archaea and Bacteria are in different Domains which means that they are also very different. Many of those differences have to do with their cellular structures and chemistry.

eukaryota

single
5
Archaea bacteria are the basis for entire ecosystems.
They are labeled as Extremophiles. They live and can thrive in conditions which we would find inhospitable.
Methanogenic archaea have been shown to be absent during infancy while omnipresent in school-aged children and their presence seems to increase with age (Dridi et al., 2012b).
P.S. you have archaea bacteria living in you.

Plants
Animals
Bacteria
Fungi
Protists

Note how it is easy to identify traits in common from one consecutive generation to the next, but as the number of generations increase, the similarities between the most recent and "oldest" generations generally fade.
Pedigree
This map is called a pedigree. What do you think the shapes represent?
12
13
Open Ended
Do you think that the organism represented by the purple circle is more closely related to the blue or the orange organism? Why?
Click on the image to enlarge.
14
Open Ended
What does the red circle organism represent for Purple, Blue, Green and Orange organisms?
15
Open Ended
What happened to the green circle organism's lineage? Are there any direct descendent of this lineage alive today?
16
Draw
Quick draw!
Any species of organism that is now extinct.
17
Multiple Choice
You compared the history of a family to the history of all life. What are some things that they have in common?
Both have a point of common ancestry.
In both, descendent inherit features from previous ancestors.
In both, descendent more closely resemble their recent ancestors than more distant ancestors.
all are in common
none are in common
18
caiman
parrot
frog
Which are most closely related?
The ____ and the ___ are most closely related because_________.
19
Which are more closely related?
Caiman
Parrot
Frog
The _____ and the _____ are most closely related because________
20
Open Ended
The ______ and the _______ are more closely related because ____________________.
21
Draw
Using the Red color, circle the point on the diagram that is the common ancestor of both the caiman and the parrot.
In Green, circle the point on the diagram that is the common ancestor of all of the organisms.
In Orange, circle the common ancestor of the hare and the human.
Think, how can a hare and human be related through a common ancestor??? Do we share any of the same traits?
22
Open Ended
What are some traits that are shared by both a hare and a human?
List as many as you can.
