Body System Interactions

Body systems have specific roles in an organism, but no body system can work on its own without the help of another. Body systems interact with each other to maintain homeostasis in the body. Here are some scenarios that require your body systems to interact with each other.

In the following slides, read the scenario then fill in the correct body system using the correct systems

Question image
You just woke up and realize your alarm did not go off and you are an hour late for school. When you quickly stand up, you feel lightheaded. What happens in your body to make you feel lightheaded?

The positional change results in decreased blood flow to the brain from the
system.

This lack of blood causes problems in the brain, which is part of the
system.

This change can lead a person to faint and fall as they lose control of their
system.

You leave your house in a hurry and you forget your jacket. While you are walking to school, you are freezing! What happens in your body to help keep you warm?

You shiver as the
system is contracting, creating friction to keep warm.

In the
system, goosebumps form on your skin to raise hairs for warmth.

Drag and Drop

Question image
You are running down the stairs trying to get to your next class on time. You trip and fall in front of other students and your face becomes flush with embarrassment. You begin to sweat and you feel your heart beating faster. What system interactions brought about this response?

The embarrassing situation causes the
system to speed up your heart rate.

The blood in the
system rushes to your face causing you to blush.

As body temperature increases, the
system releases sweat to cool the body.

Drag and Drop

Question image
In PE today, you have a mile-long race. You are trying to win but your muscles are burning, and you feel as if your legs are going to give out. What happens in your body to help you get to the finish line first?

Using the
system, your legs and arms are contracting to move you forward.

The
system brings in more oxygen for cellular respiration.

The
system transports this oxygen to your cells so ATP can be made for energy.

system secretes a hormone to control the bladder's release of urine.

Drag and Drop

Question image
On your way home, you cut through the woods and think you see a zombie behind a tree. You turn away to run but feel yourself go limp and you slump in a faint. What happened in your body to cause these reactions?

The sight of the zombie triggers adrenaline in your
system to increase as you turn to run away.

However, a sudden drop in your blood pressure slows the blood flow in the
system to the brain and you faint.

You come to in the woods and realize all you saw was a sheet with red paint on it. When you arrive home, you begin to feel unusually warm and your hands are "clammy". You grab a soda, but every sip burns your throat. After visiting Urgent Care, the doctor informs you that you have strep throat. What happens in your body to fight the infection?

The hypothalamus gland in the
system triggers the formation of a fever.

The Streptococcus bacteria causes the
system to respond and make white blood cells inside the bone marrow of the
system.

The
system transports the white blood cells to the infected area.
