1.1 What is a robot?

A robot is a machine, built & programmed by humans to do jobs. Once programmed, it does its job without humans' help.

Does not need humans to control its actions & not get bored with its job.

It does not make mistakes & humans are only needed if the robot develops a fault.

Humanoid means like human & look like people.

Robots take part in day-to-day task competitions.

These robots are used by scientists to develop methods that might be used in the future.

What does a robot look like ?

Human use their hands & arms to do most jobs.

Robots must be able to move like human arms to do the same jobs.

The robot arm has joints that bend and twist.

A robot arm has a hand to grip things with.

Many robots do a job that humans do without looking human.

Examples: Robot vacuum cleaner, insects CCTV & etc.

  • Jobs where action needs to be done in the same way many times

  • Example: Put a wheel to a car

  • If humans are doing it, they can get tired / make mistakes / injure themselves.

1.2 What jobs can robot do ?

    • Some jobs need great accuracy, a single mistake could spoil the whole product.

    • Robot are needed to carry a detailed & accurate work in order to minimize the mistakes

  1. Dangerous work

  • Jobs where it is dangerous & not safe for humans.

  • Example: work in chemicals & radioactivity, Weapon test.

What makes a robot work ?

Sensors - Act like your eyes & ears.
- They tell the robot what is happening in the world around it.

Controller - Brain of the robot.

Actuators - Muscles of a robot. It makes the robot move.

Proximity sensors - Tell a robot how close an object is.

Bumpers - Tell the robot it has collided with something.

Pressure sensors - Let a robot know that it is touching something.
