Multiplying Binomials FOIL & BOX Method

Objectives

• Students will use the FOIL method to multiply binomials

• Students will use the BOX method to multiply binomials

• Students will be able to multiply a binomial by another binomial using either the FOIL or BOX method.

What is the FOIL method?

To multiply binomials, FIRST distribute each term in the first binomial to each term in the other binomial, THEN combine like terms. This order of distributing is referred to as the "FOIL" method.

What is the BOX method?

The BOX method does the same thing as the FOIL method and distributes all terms across the binomials. The difference is that it does it using a box, a nice way for visual learners to grasp this!
