​What is an essay?

An essay is...

a piece of writing that usually has five or more paragraphs. An essay is written about one topic that has several main points. The main points are mentioned the first paragraph (the introduction) and supported in body paragraphs. The conclusion is the last paragraph.

The introduction let's your reader know what you will be talking about.

It is made of a "hook", background information, and thesis.​

The first body paragraph explains the first point you want to make. It has a topic sentence, evidence and explanation (similar to one RACE paragraph).

The third body paragraph is the same as 1 and 2. In some shorter essays there are only two body paragraphs.
