In his book, Going to Extremes, Nick Middleton talks about his visit to Oymyakon, the coldest inhabited place on Earth.

“Most people live in places with some sun, rain, or snow. But there are people living in places with extreme weather conditions. I wanted to find out what life was like for them.”

There’s not much to eat in a place like Oymyakon, where weather is extreme.

“People eat reindeer and horse meat—that’s about it. They drink the milk from their animals, too, to stay healthy. They can grow things for a short time during the summer. But they don’t eat many fruits or vegetables.”

People keep warm with animal fur.

“Fur. It’s the only thing that keeps you warm. Reindeer fur is very warm. It keeps your body heat inside.”

It’s difficult for people to live in such a cold place. Their lifestyle is very different from most people’s lives.

“The people in Oymyakon do more or less everything themselves. They own animals to eat, to make things from their leather and fur, and to sell so they can make money to buy other things. Everyone helps each other out. For them, extreme temperatures are normal!”
