  • rotate clockwise (opposite of planet rotation)

  • Biggest moons

    • Io (highest density of any moon, strongest surface gravity of any moon, over 400 active volcanoes & lowest amount of water)

    • Europa (possible liquid water underneath frozen crust)

    • Ganymede (largest moon in the solar system; larger than Mercury; high radiation maybe due to tidal heating)

    • Callisto (small craters indicate considered best possible location amongst moons of Jupiter for surface habitation)

Theories:

  • Gravitational tugs from Jupiter's moons and the planet itself stretch and squish the moons enough to warm them

  • Elliptical Orbital and rotational energy results in heat in the crust of the moon.

  • Consequences of this heating are a subsurface ocean, geysers, and tectonically deformed terrains.
