Literary devices refers to the typical structures used by writers in their works to
convey his or her messages in a simple manner to the readers.
○When employed properly, the different literary devices help readers to
appreciate, interpret and analyze a literary work.

In Module 1 we learned the following terms:

Story Elements Review

Characters

A character is a person, animal,
being, creature, or thing in a
story. Writers use characters to
perform the actions and speak
dialogue, moving the story
along.

Character Traits

A character trait is a literary term for
adjectives and descriptions that
writers use to add personality and
depth to characters. In fictional
stories, character traits serve a
number of purposes, including:
Helping readers connect and identify
with a character.
Providing insight into a character's
motivations.

Characterization

Characterization is the act of creating and
describing characters in literature.
Characterization includes both descriptions of
a character's physical attributes as well as the
character's personality. The way that characters
act, think, and speak also adds to their
characterization.

Direct characterization (explicit), describes
the character through their physical
description, line of work, or passions and
pursuits.

Indirect characterization (implicit),
describes a character through their thoughts,
actions, speech, and dialogue.
