Learning Objective

Remember: Recall the basic electronics components.

Understand: Explain the significance of LED polarity in

electronic circuits.

Apply: Connect LEDs in series and parallel while

ensuring correct polarity.

Analyze: Differentiate between series and parallel

connections of LEDs

Light Emitting Diode-What is it?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.
It's a tiny electronic component that emits light when

electricity passes through it.

LEDs come in different colors like red, green, blue, and

white.

Light Emitting Diode-Application and
Advantage

That's why LEDs are used in things like lamps,

TVs, and even traffic lights!

They’re energy efficient, durable, and come in all

sorts of colors.

7

Multiple Choice

Which is the corrrect symbol for LED?

8

Multiple Choice

Choose the best answer. What are the advantages of using an LED.

1

Energy efficient

2

Variety of colours

3

Durable

4

All of the above

9

Light Emitting Diode-Polarity

An LED has two legs: a long one and a short one

Long leg, aka Anode, is the positive terminal

Short leg, aka Cathode, is the negative terminal

Light Emitting Diode-Circuit Diagram

Connect the long leg to the plus side of the battery or

power source.

Connect the short leg to the minus side.
If you connect them the wrong way, the LED won't light

up.

11

Fill in the Blank

The positve leg of the LED is also known as...

12

Multiple Choice

The cathode of the LED should be connected to which terminal of the battery.

1

positve terminal

2

negative terminal

3

does not matter whether it is negative or postive terminal

13

media

Light Emitting Diode-How the circuit
works
When the switch is turned on, the circuit closes.

Current flows from the batteries to the positive (+) leg

(Anode) of the LED.

Electrical energy is converted to light energy. LED light is emitted.

14

media

Light Emitting Diode- In Series

Series arrangement of LEDs means connecting them end-to-

end like a chain.

You take one LED and connect its positive (+) leg (Anode) to

the negative (-) leg (Cathode) of another LED, and so on.

The current flows through each LED in the line, one after the

other.

15

media

Light Emitting Diode- In Parallel

Parallel arrangement of LEDs means each LED has its

own separate connection to the power source.

You take each LED and connect its positive (+) leg

(Anode) to the positive side of the power source and
its negative (-) leg (Cathode)to the negative side.

Advantages and Disadvantages of
Connecting LEDs in Series and Parallel

LEDs arranged in
Series

LEDs arranged in

Advantage

Consistent
Brightness
Simple wiring
Safety

Each LED works
independently
Stable Brightness

Disadvantage

Closing

LED has different polarity.

LEDs need to be connected in consideration of its
polarity for it to work.

LEDs can be connected in series and parallel. They
have advantages and disadvantages
