"My face. It doesn't matter," I said. "God has given me a new life." My recovery was a blessing, a gift from God and from all the people who had cared for me and prayed for me. And I was at peace. But while I was in Birmingham watching Shrek and his talking donkey, my poor parents had been thousands of miles away, enduring their own terrible pain. I had been healing while they had been suffering. But from that day on, our family began to heal together.

an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

Salt Tax
Britain’s Salt Act of 1882 prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt, a staple in their diet.
Indian citizens were forced to buy the vital mineral from their British rulers
British rulers charged a heavy salt tax.
Although India’s poor suffered most under the tax, all Indians required salt.
