Read & Take Notes
Instructions: Read the passage below. Take notes in the space provided.
Created with web.diffit.me
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is when we change our clocks to make
the days longer. It first started in the United States in 1918 during a
war, but it wasn't consistent everywhere until 1966. Some people don't
like DST because the sun rises really late in some parts of the country.
In 2022, 48 states in the United States used DST, but some places like
Arizona and Hawaii didn't.
There are different opinions about whether we should keep DST or
not. Some people think we should keep it because it makes things safer,
helps the economy, and promotes active lifestyles. Longer daylight
hours mean fewer car accidents and robberies. People have more time
to go shopping and do outdoor activities. But other people think DST
has negative effects on our health, productivity, and wallets. Changing
our sleep patterns can mess up our natural body rhythms and make us
feel not so great. It can also make us less focused at work and waste
more time on the internet.
Changing the clocks twice a year costs Americans a lot of money. It
costs $1.7 billion in lost opportunity cost and causes confusion for the
airline industry. There are interesting facts about DST, like how
Benjamin Franklin suggested waking up earlier to use sunlight instead
of candles. Farmers in America didn't like DST because their cows
weren't ready to be milked until later in the day. Now, people are
discussing whether the United States should keep DST all year round or
not.
Some people want to change the way we set our clocks and keep the
same time all year round. They think it's a waste of time and money.
Reading different articles and understanding both sides of the issue can
help us argue our position better. We can also write to our national
senators and representatives to tell them what we think. Overall,
Daylight Saving Time is a topic that people all over the world have
different opinions about.
