Changing sentence length when writing can help

-add details to make it more interesting to the reader
-make clearer sense to the reader
-create smoother writing.

Lengthening a sentence

by making a sentence longer, you can add details to create context and a more interesting story

The girl rode her bicycle to work -versus- The girl pedaled as quickly as she could on her bicycle to make it to work on time.

This adds a bit of emotion to the sentence by telling you how and why.

Shortening a sentence

making longer sentences shorter can help the reader understand clearer

Having been sick for quite some time, she still decided to get on stage and sing as best as she could.
-Versus-
Despite being sick, she sang her heart out on stage.

The second sentence is clearer and focuses on the main points

Combining sentences

combining sentences together can make writing less choppy

He likes to write. He likes to read. He likes to play the piano.

-Versus-

He likes to read, write, and play the piano.

By combining the things he likes to do, it makes for smoother reading.

Formal language does not contain:
- contractions (can't, won't, I'm, isn't, ...)
-abbreviations (ASAP, Fri., BRB, G2G, ...)
-slang (Howdy, Yo, reckon', ...)
