Formal Meet and Greet

In Germany, if you are meeting a grown up for the
first time, someone you have never met before or
don’t know very well, it is polite to shake hands.

Also, there is a formal and informal word for the
English word you.

For example, in: How are you?

Wie geht es dir?

Wie geht es Ihnen?

If you ask someone you know,
you can use the informal ‘you’.

If you ask someone you don’t
know or a grown up such as
your teacher, you need to use
the formal ‘you’.
