Dire and Ouvrir

Irregular Verbs:
dire and ouvrir

We've seen this verb used all year in the directions of our book exercises like the example below:

"Dites si les personnes suivantes disent qu'elles vont venir ou pas."

​dire - to say, to tell

nous - disons

vous - dites

ils/elles - disent
**As always, do not pronounce the "ent" on this one. It's just pronounced like "dees"

je - dis

tu - dis

il/elle/on - dit

**All three in this column are pronounced "dee"

Let's look at the conjugation of the verb dire.

​Qu'est-ce que vous dites? - What are you saying?
Je dis que c'est cher. - I say it's expensive.

Passé Composé

When using the passé composé, the past participle of dire is dit, and its helping verb is avoir.

J'ai dit que vous devez faire vos devoirs: I said that you must do your homework.

ouvrir - to open

This verb can be used when saying you are physically opening things like a door or a package. It can also be used more metaphorically to say a store or business is open.

Also, although this looks like and -ir verb, it is actually conjugated with the same rules as regular -er verbs

nous - ouvrons

vous - ouvrez

ils/elles - ouvrent

j' - ouvre

tu - ouvres

il/elle/on - ouvre
