Have you ever wondered when and how the stationery products we use every day were developed? When you take a close look at the stationery products you have, you will notice that many of them are made in Japan. There are also products that were originally invented overseas and further developed in Japan.

Take the stapleless stapler, for example. It is said that the regular stapler was invented in France in the 18th century. As time went on, stationery companies tried to develop a stapleless stapler, which turned out to be extremely difficult. In 2009, a major Japanese stationery company released a new user-friendly stapleless model. When documents bound without staples were distributed to the delegates at the IMF/ World Bank Annual Meeting in Tokyo in 2012, their new model immediately impressed everyone in attendance. The delegates realized this new type of stapler would not need to be reloaded and would be more economical and eco-friendly.

In this chapter, let’s take a look at some interesting stories of stationery products and see how they have influenced our lives for the better.
