Augmented Reality (AR)
Grade 5
2
Augmented Reality (AR) combines the physical world with the virtual world by superimposing computer-generated images or animations into a real-world environment.
Basically, this means is that, when you look through the camera of a phone or tablet, a 3D model will appear as if it’s in the real world.
The addition of this computer-generated content enhances and changes a user's view of reality.
What is Augmented Reality (AR) ?
3
The overlaid content can be constructive (adding something to the real-world) or destructive (by masking areas of the world to create a desired effect).
Augmented reality is often used on portable devices with cameras so that the images can be imposed on any given environment.
As an example, a computer-generated butterfly could be imposed onto your hand using your phone or tablet.
Objects in the real-world can also be 'augmented'. This is when you hold a phone, tablet or even desktop facing a real world object which 'comes to life' with 3D augmented reality objects on top of it or emerging from it.
Augmented reality is different from Virtual Reality, which is a simulated experience that creates whole new environments.
4
Augmented reality technology is also being applied to books and publishing.
AR can be used to enhance stories with overlaid images, sound and extra content to help children engage with the book in a way that is unique and exciting.

An increasing number of video games and apps are using Augmented Reality.

How can Augmented Reality be used?
5
Virtual Reality is much different from Augmented Reality. Virtual Reality simulates the world all around you. It fools your brain into thinking you are somewhere else. Augmented Reality makes the currently world better through the use of several different things.
In our upcoming lessons we will discuss Virtual Reality in more detail
