Past Continuous tense

Past Continuous Tense digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa suatu aksi sedang terjadi pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau (cerita)

Ciri dari tense ini adalah menggunakan was/were + verb-ing.

POLA KALIMAT PAST CONTINUOUS

• (+) S + tobe(was/were) + Ving + O + Adverb

• (-) S + tobe(was/were) + Not + Ving + O + Adverb

• (?) Tobe (was/were) + S + Ving + O + Adverb

PENGGUNAAN PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

• 1. Untuk menyatakan aktivitas yang sedang dilakukan dimasa lampau (waktu tertentu). Contoh:

• At night o’clock PM, I was studying grammar.

• __Time signals __ S + was + Ving + O

• We were reading last night

• S + were + Ving + time signal

PENGGUNAAN PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

2. Untuk menyatakan dua aktifitas yang terjadi di waktu lampau. Yakni kejadian / aktifitas pertama sedang berlangsung dan di susul kejadian / aktivitas kedua datang (menyela).

Contoh :

Aktifitas I : I was walking down the street. (sedang berjalan).

Aktifitas II : It began to rain. (menyela).

Cara penggabungan :

I was walking down the street when it began to rain.

When I was walking, it began to rain.

PENGGUNAAN PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

3. Terkadang past continuous digunakan untuk menyatakan aktifitas diwaktu lampau yang berjalan secara bersamaan.

Contoh :

Aktifitas I : I was studying in one room of our apartment.

Aktifitas II : My roommate was having a party in the other room.

Cara penggabungan :

While I was studying in one room of our apartment, my roommate was having a party in the other room.

I was studying in one room of our apartment while my roommate was having a party in the other room.

Time Signal (Aturan penggunaan waktu)

• When : Ketika

• While : Sementara

• At nine O’clock yesterday : Pada jam Sembilan kemaren

• Yesterday morning : Kemaren pagi / pagi kemaren

• Last night at seven o’clock : Jam tujuh kemaren malem

• At the same time yesterday : pada waktu yang sama kemaren

• Before : Sebelum / After : Sesudah
