Suffixes

When a root word has one short vowel and ends with one consonant, double the final consonant before adding a suffix beginning with a vowel.

Adding Suffixes

hop + -ing = hopping

When a root word ends with a long vowel, a consonant and a silent e, drop the e before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel.

Adding Suffixes

bake + -ing = baking

When a root word ends with a y and the suffix begins with an e, change the y to i before adding the suffix.
