Punctuating Quotes
©2021 Simplify Writing™
When you quote text, copy the exact words that another author wrote. This could be from a book, an article, a website, or another
source. When you quote text, put the words that you’ve copied in quotation marks and tell the reader where you got the
information.
Example
According to the author of The World’s Most Majestic Mountains,
“Mt. Everest is over 60 million years old.”
The author stated that “The average lifespan of a toucan in the wild is 20 years.”
Martin Luther King, Jr. says, “The time is always right to do what is right.”
Directions: Add punctuation to the sentences below.
The exact quotes are in italics so you know where to put the quotation marks.
The author stated that They housed us sometimes with blind folks, which for me made communication impossible.
According to Jeremy Woody, as told to Christie Thompson I was writing back and forth to the guard, and he said he couldn’t write
because it’s considered personal communication, and it was against prison policy for guards to have a personal relationship with inmates.
