Psychological Theories

In the last few lessons we have been looking at some theories that relate to Psychology.
This is working towards C2: Describe psychological theories.

4

Target grade

Some of you have capped yourselves at D grade on task 1 (by not attempting C1). This means that you are either already finished, or will be finished with Task 1 RESUB.

Think about what grade you would like to achieve in this unit, considering what you have done so far and the criteria you would still like to attempt.

5

Poll

What grade would you like to achieve?

D grade

(I met all Ds in Task 1, I've finished the unit)

D grade (I haven't met all Ds the first time around, but I've submitted my RESUB)

C grade (I attempted C1 in task 1, and will complete C2 and C3 in task 2)

B grade (I attempted all grade in task 1 and will complete the Cs and Bs in task 2)

A or A* grade (I attempted all grade in task 1 and will complete most or all of task 2)

6

If you are aiming for a...

D - I will mark your resub (if you had one) and will sign you off.

C - I will ask you to focus on C2 and C3 (task 2) this and next week. You won't have to complete any more online lessons, we can aim to get you finished.

B, A and A* - These criteria are still being taught, so we will ask you to continue to attend and learn about these, to be fully prepared for task 2.

7

If your target grade is a D or a C, I will be contacting you this week on Teams, so look out for my messages :)

8

Now about the theories again

I will present some Health and Social Care scenarios to you.
You will need select the correct theory that is being applied there, and tell me how you think it applies.

Ready?

9

Scenario 1

In a health and social care setting, a therapist is working with a patient who has developed a fear of needles due to past negative experiences during medical procedures. The therapist is gradually pairing exposure to needles with pleasant experiences, such as calming music or imagery. Over time, the patient's fear diminishes as they start to associate needles with relaxation rather than fear.

10

Multiple Choice

The therapist is conditioning the emotion this patient associates with needles.

What theory applies here?

1

Attachment theory (Bowlby)

2

Classical conditioning (Pavlov)

3

General adaptation syndrome (Selye)

4

Social Learning Theory (Bandura)

11

Scenario 2

The teacher notices the children in her Year 1 class are not drinking enough water throughout the day. She decides to start putting her water bottle on her desk, where everyone can see it. Once in a while, she says 'I'm so thirsty, I will just drink some water before I continue'.
She notices that after a week some children start having their bottles on their desks, and they will say to themselves 'I'm so thirsty, I better drink some water'. All children have now improved their water intake.

12

Multiple Choice

The teacher was modelling the habit of drinking water so that her students learnt by observation.

What theory applies here?

1

Social Learning Theory (Bandura)

2

Classical conditioning (Pavlov)

3

Psychoanalytic Theory (Freud)

4

Attachment theory (Bowlby)

13

Scenario 3

In a therapeutic setting, a psychologist is working with a client experiencing anxiety. He uses techniques such as free association or dream analysis to uncover underlying conflicts or unresolved childhood experiences contributing to the anxiety symptoms.

14

Multiple Choice

The psychologist is guiding the exploration of unconscious processes influencing behaviour and mental health.

What theory applies here?

1

Social Learning Theory (Bandura)

2

Classical conditioning (Pavlov)

3

Psychoanalytic Theory (Freud)

4

Attachment theory (Bowlby)

15

Scenario 4

In a childcare setting, practitioners prioritise responsive and nurturing interactions with infants to promote a secure base for exploration and emotional regulation. They make sure they listen to the child and attend to them when they are feeling sad or anxious. This allows the child to trust their care, and develop a strong bond between them.

16

Open Ended

How does this last scenario apply to Bowlby's Attachment theory?

17

Dropdown

Theory

Based on her observations and research, Ainsworth concluded that there were three main styles of attachment:

attachment: Securely attached children seek comfort when frightened and prefer parents to strangers.

attachment: Anxiously attached children are wary of strangers, exhibit great distress when a parent leaves, but are not comforted by a parent's return.

attachment: Avoidantly attached children show little preference for parents over strangers and seek little comfort from their caregivers.

18

Poll

How easy was this lesson? Was it easy to recognise different theories in these scenarios?

Yes

Some of them
