The Earth's Resources

  • The Earth has many natural resources that make life in the modern world possible.

  • Earth's natural resources include

light, air, water, plants, animals, soil, stone, minerals and fossil

    fuels.

  • People need some natural resources to stay alive. They use others to make their lives better.

Natural Resources

  • Resources which are obtained from nature are called Natural Resources

  • Oil, coal, natural gas, metals, stone and sand are natural resources.

  • Food, clothes, shelter, medicine and transportation depend mainly on Natural Resources.

Managing Natural Resources

  • Over a considerable period of time mankind has not been able to manage natural resources effectively due to the population growth, reduced access to a number of resources and over-use of the rest of natural resources.

  • People across the globe are using up the Earth's resources at an alarming rate.

media

8

Apart from overpopulation, the major causes of the depletion of our Natural Resources are :

Deforestation

Technological and industrial development

Erosion

Pollution and contamination of resources

media

Erosion is when tiny pieces of the Earth's surface are moved from one place to another. This is usually caused by moving water or wind.

Erosion usually happens very slowly.

Erosion

Technological and industrial development

Factories and industries release harmful chemicals into the air.

These chemicals can harm plants, animals, and humans.

Fossil Fuel

  • A fossil fuel is a fuel formed by natural processes over millions of years from the remains of dead animals and plants that were buried under dirt and rock.

  • There are three major forms of fossil fuels:

  1. coal

  2. oil

  3. natural gas.

16

Renewable Resources

Earth's resources are often classified into Renewable and Nonrenewable resources.

Renewable resources are usually living and therefore can renew themselves or that nature can continuously produce. They are materials that can be replenished through natural and/or human processes. For example, even though trees die naturally or are harvested, new trees are naturally reseeded or can be replanted by humans. Wind, sun, rain, plants and animals are some good examples of renewable resources.

Renewable resources include wind energy and solar energy.

17

Nonrenewable Resources

Non-renewable resources are those which cannot be replaced once they are used up or harvested. For example, fossil fuels are formed through natural processes that take millions of years. If we use all the available fossil fuels, no additional amounts will ever be available to us; at least not for millions of years.

Examples of Non-renewable resources include fossil fuels, such as coal, petroleum and natural gas and rare minerals

23

World Population

  • Human wants, needs and actions have created a large impact on the earth's environment.

  • In the twentieth century the world's population exploded from 2.5 billion to 7.7 billion in the year 2018.

  • The standard of living has improved dramatically as a result the consumption of the earth's resources have increased to meet the needs of humans thereby depleting those resources .

media

24

Depletion of Resources

  • Resource depletion is the consumption of a resource faster than it can be replenished.

  • Standard of living is the level of material wealth and income available to a person.

Deforestation

  • Deforestation refers to the cutting clearing and removal of forests by logging and or burning.

  • Logging is the activity of cutting down trees in order to sell the wood.

  • Many trees are being cut to make room for more houses and farms, and to use the wood for fuel.

media

30

Habitats

  • Cutting or burning forests has a number of negative effects on soil water, and the climate.

  • Species have lost their habitat, and many of them are at the verge of extinction.

  • A habitat is the home of an animal or a plant.

36

Extinction

  • Extinction is the death of all members of a certain species

  • Extinct animals are animal species that have stopped breeding, died and no longer exist. Here are examples of extinct animals: Dinosaurs- Woolly Mammoth- Dodo- West African Black Rhinoceros.

  • Some animals are haunted, killed, or sold for their meat, fur and sometimes just for sport.

media

37

Causes of Extinction

  • The most common cause of extinction is a sudden, serious change in a species’ habitat. Animals can rarely survive such sudden change. Their food supply may be wiped out. They may also lose shelter or other things that they need to survive.

  • Many things can change a species’ habitat. fires, volcanoes, and other natural events may be causes. People also change the environment in ways that drastically affect animals. People clear forests and drain wetlands.

The Three R's

  • We can safeguard our environment with the Three R's

  • Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

  • These three R's help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away

media

45

Reduce and Reuse

  • Reduce consumption - We must decrease our mineral consumption. Reducing the amount of waste we produce is the best way to help the environment.

  • Reuse - We must reuse the beneficial items. Plastic containers and reusable lunch bags are great ways to take our lunch to school without creating waste.

media

46

Recycle

  • Recycle -Many of the things we use every day, like paper bags, soda cans, and milk cartons, are made out of materials that can be recycled.

  • Recycled items are put through a process that makes it possible to create new products out of the materials of the old ones. Minerals in products can be recycled. Even industrial waste can be recycled. One industry may use the waste products of another industry.
