Initiative
What is it ?
What is a definition for initiative in government? Government
initiatives are a way for people to have their voices heard and get
the chance for a vote on issues that they care about. In the United
States and in other countries, the government is comprised of
representatives of the people who act in those people's interests. If
they should fail to do so, however, an initiative is politics' way to
allow people to circumvent the legislative branch of government. A
direct initiative allows the population to vote on an issue without
the legislative branch's involvement. According to this initiative
definition, government offices may not always do their jobs
correctly; if they do not, then the people need the ability to take
matters into their own hands.

How Initiatives Work
If someone is interested in creating a government initiative, they
will need to take several steps. These steps vary by state; initiatives
are almost always put forward at the state level, and not all states
allow them. Generally speaking, creating an initiative requires
following these steps:
●Deciding on an issue that is not being addressed by the
current government
●Creating a petition to garner support from other members
of the community
●Getting a certain number of signatures (this number varies
by state)
●Having the initiative verified by the appropriate authorities
●Putting the initiative to a vote
If the initiative is approved, it can be passed into law. The process
can take some time, but it is a much more direct way for citizens to
participate in the lawmaking process than most other day-to-day
options that those who are not in government have.

Initiative Two
Types
There are different types of initiatives, namely direct and indirect. These types
of initiatives vary in their application and in their legality in different locations. In
some cases, text about initiative laws might include a ''ballot initiative''
definition. This is a general term for all initiatives; ballot initiatives can also be
direct or indirect.
Direct Initiative
A direct initiative is a citizen-led proposition that, once approved, goes directly
on a voting ballot for the general public to vote on. Before this vote can take
place, state elections officials must make sure that the initiative is
constitutionally sound, that its petition has enough legitimate signatures from
registered voters, and that it uses correct legal terminology and language
throughout. If enough people vote in favor of the initiative, it becomes law.

Initiative Two
Types
Indirect Initiative
An indirect initiative has the same preparatory process as a direct
initiative. However, rather than going directly on the ballot, indirect
initiatives are put before the legislative government for a vote. This
may seem strange since the point of an initiative is to circumvent
legislative voting entirely. However, indirect initiatives are a great
way to make sure that government officials see voter opinions that
they might not otherwise have known much about. Like direct
initiatives, indirect initiatives are primarily meant to benefit citizens.
