G6.3.3 I can differentiate between unavoidable waste (like food leftovers) and waste which should not be generated (like using batteries which are not rechargeable).

Why each item might become waste?

3

The concept of unavoidable waste versus waste that should not be generated

Unavoidable waste is like the stuff we can't really help making. It's created naturally or during activities we need to do. Think about when you eat an apple and throw away the core or when a factory makes toys and has leftover bits. These kinds of waste are just part of how things work.

The concept of unavoidable waste versus waste that should not be generated

Waste that shouldn't be made is different. It's the stuff we make but don't really need to. Like when we use too much plastic for wrapping things or when we throw away toys because they break easily. This kind of waste happens because of how we do things, and we can try to find better ways to stop making it.

So, unavoidable waste is like the bits we can't avoid making, while waste we shouldn't make is the stuff we could try not to create in the first place by being smarter about how we use things.

  1. Unavoidable waste: Examples like food leftovers. Even though we try to minimize food waste, it's sometimes unavoidable because we can't always eat everything we have.

  2. Waste that should not be generated: Examples like non-rechargeable batteries. Using items like these contributes more to waste and pollution, and why it's better to choose alternatives like rechargeable batteries.

Why it's important to be mindful of the waste we generate?

How can we make choices to reduce it?

Being mindful of the waste we make is important because it helps protect the Earth and keeps it clean. When we make too much waste, it can hurt plants, animals, and people. Here's how we can help:

  1. Use Less Stuff: Try not to use things that you'll just throw away quickly. Like instead of using plastic forks and spoons, you can use real ones.

  2. Reuse Things: Don't throw things away if you can use them again. For example, you can use old jars for storing things like pencils or coins.

  1. Recycle: Separate things like paper, plastic, and glass from your trash. These things can often be turned into new things instead of being thrown away.

  2. Don't Waste Food: Try to eat all the food on your plate so it doesn't get thrown away. And if you have food scraps, you can compost them to help plants grow.

  3. Pick Up Litter: If you see trash on the ground, pick it up and put it in a trash can. This helps keep our neighborhoods clean.

10

Remember, every little thing we do to reduce waste helps make a big difference for our planet!
