What is the coast?
The coast is the narrow strip of shoreline that separates the land from the sea. Land, sea and air meet at the coast, making it a constantly-changing environment. The coast is also affected by human activity - over 4 billion people worldwide now live at the coast.
9
Why study coasts?
As an island nation we have 19,491 miles of coast! So it’s important to keep up to date with our every changing inch of it!
10

Caribbean
Norway
UK

Read through the passage and answer the following questions
1)What is the coast? – summarise in less than 20 words
2)What is the difference between onshore and offshore?
3)What does the term diverse mean?
4)Why is not one coastline the same (explain why those factors cause diversity)
5)In the passage, it describes the coast to be 3 meeting points of what areas?
6)What is the difference between the two physical processes shaping the landforms?

Why are waves important to the coast?

17
What causes waves?
Waves are caused when the wind blows over the sea, transferring some of its energy. Friction with the sea water causes ripples to form and these develop into waves as they reach the coast.
18

What factors affect the size of the waves?

Finish the sentence….
Friction between the prevailing wind and the sea causes the water to move in the direction of the wind. The wave now moves in a ……
Follow these key words to help you structure your answer:
Circular motion, friction with beach, base of wave, slow, top of wave, fast, elliptical motion, break

Types of waves
We are going to study two different types of wave
•Constructive waves
•Destructive waves

Draw
Draw a quick sketch of a constructive and a destructive wave.

Drag and Drop
Constructive waves

Answers
43
Categorize
They are formed by distant storms which can be 100s of km away
These waves surge up the beach with a stronger swash
The waves are well spaced apart and are less powerful when they reach the coast.
low energy
They rear up to form towering waves before crashing down onto the beach
They destroy the beach
High energy
There is little forward movement when this type of wave breaks but there is a powerful backwash
They carry large amounts of sediment and ‘construct’ the beach
waves are formed by local storms close to the coast
This wave drags material away from the beach, eroding it (wearing it away)
They have a weak swash as little material is left behind on the beach
They have a strong swash which pushed material up the beach.
Organise these options into the right categories
