  • Variables and Evaluation

2

Natural Numbers and Whole Numbers

Natural numbers (or counting numbers):
{1,2,3,4,5,...}
- Natural numbers do not include 0 or negative numbers.

media

Whole numbers:
{0,1,2,3,4,...}
- Whole numbers do not include negative numbers but do include 0.
- WHOLE numbers do not include decimals.

3

Operations of Arithmetic

media
  • addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

4

  • Numbers that are added are called addends, and the result of their addition is the sum.

1 + 1 = 2

  • In subtraction the subtrahend is taken from the minuend. The result is the difference.

3 - 2 = 1

  • Numbers that are multiplied are called factors. The result of their multiplication is the product.

2 x 2 = 4

  • In division the dividend is divided by the divisor. The result is the quotient.

10 5 = 2

Variables and Evaluation

  • The letters are called variables

  • Evaluate just means to solve. When we are given a specific number for the variable we evaluate the expression.

Evaluate the expression for x = 10 and y = 5:
x + y

Plug in the 10 in place of the x and 5 in place of the y

10 + 5 = 15

6

Daily Challenge:
(write on the "daily challenge" paper)
Evaluate each expression for
A = 20 and B = 4:
a. A + B
b. A - B
c. AB
d. A/B

Remember if you get 4 daily challenges correct you get a sticker from the sticker wall.
4 stickers give you 1 free friday homework pass!
