Component 1 –
Performance

It will be worth 30 marks (30% of the total marks
available).

The performance will give learners the opportunity
to demonstrate the following:

applying a range of movement and performance skills during

a high-level single performance

making decisions during a high-level single performance
The performance will take the form of a single, high-level

performance requiring the learner to demonstrate
consistently complex movement and performance skills, with
a high-level of fluency and control.

Learners must show that they understand and can

appropriately respond to the varied demands presented by
high-level performance, with respect for rules, regulations
and etiquette which apply to the chosen physical activity.

Their performance must be in a challenging, demanding

and/or competitive context and be of a sufficient length to
allow learners to demonstrate the required skills. ‘Sufficient
length’ will be whatever the norm is for the chosen physical
activity.

Component 2 -
Project

The project will have 70 marks (70% of the total
marks available).

The project is designed to assess learners’

research and investigation skills, as well as their
ability to apply their knowledge and understanding
to performance development.

This research could be into a topic which impacts

either on the learner’s performance, or the
performance of another person, team or group.

The purpose of the project is to assess the learner’s
ability to integrate and apply skills, knowledge and
understanding from across the Units.

Component 2 –
Project cont.

The project gives you the opportunity to investigate a topic that impacts on performance. This may be an area of interest based on what you have studied in class, but you are also free to research any other appropriate topic. This may be a topic that impacts either on your own performance, or on the performance of another person, team or group.

The activity must adhere to the ‘Acceptable Activities’ instructions from SQA in the Advanced Higher Physical Education Performance Coursework Assessment Task (available on SQA’s website)

You should discuss these questions with your teacher:

Does this topic allow you to apply knowledge of physical education at Advanced Higher level?

Have you checked that there is enough appropriate information for the research you plan to carry out?

Can you overcome all potential barriers, for example health and safety issues, permissions, or logistics?

Would you be able to complete it in the time available, and within the word count?

If you answer ‘no’ to any of these questions, you may need to reconsider your project idea in discussion with your teacher.
