We use the PAST SIMPLE to talk about actions happened in the past. We use it to talk about FINISHED actions. They also give as specific details or information about the event.
Example:
Maria broke her arm yesterday.
Did you meet in 2019?
I went to Miami 3 years ago.
Sandy and Ana played in the park last week.
Sam didn't pick up the children at school.
