Multiple Choice
Select the option that best completes the following sentence.
Photosynthesis requires light energy to split water molecules into:
Oxygen and Glucose
Oxygen and Hydrogen
Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen
5
Multiple Select
Predict which of these you would expect to increase a pot plant's ability to photosynthesize. (Select all that apply)
Providing it with plenty of water
Enclosing it in a tank of pure oxygen instead of air
Placing it in a dark room
Increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air
6
Photosynthesis
Trees and other plants get a lot of their mass from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This combines with water in a chemical reaction known as photosynthesis. Besides matter – carbon dioxide and water – the reaction also requires energy in the form of sunlight.
7
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is a chemical process with two main stages:
Light energy splits water to form oxygen and hydrogen
The hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to form glucose, a simple sugar made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
8
Photosynthesis
Land plants aren't the only things that carry out photosynthesis – there's also algae and a type of bacteria called cyanobacteria. In the oceans, many types of plankton carry out photosynthesis.
9
Match

Respiration
Respiration is the reaction that releases the chemical energy in glucose for use in life processes. All living things need energy and use respiration to get it.
Respiration is often called cellular respiration because it takes place in cells. Each individual cell has to carry it out in order to stay alive. But the energy released is also used by whole organisms – to grow, repair damage, and reproduce.
11
Respiration
There are different types of respiration, but the most common use oxygen and glucose to form carbon dioxide and water.
They are the same as in photosynthesis, except there, carbon dioxide and water react to form glucose and oxygen. So respiration is the reverse reaction of photosynthesis.
12
Multiple Choice
Identify whether the following statement is true or false.
Photosynthesis occurs in plants but respiration only occurs in animals.
True
False
13
Multiple Choice
Select the word equation for respiration.
Hint: Remember that respiration is the reverse of photosynthesis.
Glucose + Carbon Dioxide > Water + Oxygen + Energy
Water + Carbon Dioxide + Energy > Glucose + Oxygen
Glucose + Oxygen > Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
Glucose + Oxygen + Energy > Carbon Dioxide + Water
14
Multiple Choice
Determine whether the following statement is true or false.
While respiration in plants requires glucose, respiration in animals does not.
True
False
15
Multiple Select
Determine which of the following would require at least some of your body's cells to respire.
Playing a football game
Growing taller
Recovering from a leg injury
Eating a meal
16
Multiple Choice
Describe the relationship between respiration and breathing.
They are both chemical reactions and one is the reverse of the other
Breathing provides the carbon dioxide needed for respiration
Respiration is the chemical reaction with the sole function of allowing us to breathe
Breathing makes respiration possible by supplying oxygen from the air and getting rid of the carbon dioxide produced
