WHAT IS AI?

AI or artificial intelligence is technology designed to
learn and make decisions, which can closely mimic
human intelligence.

The graphic to the left demonstrates the long history of AI, but it has only caught the interest of the public in the past 10 to 15 years.

Since 2011 we have been living with AI in the form of
Siri, the iPhone chat assistant.

USES OF AI

In the 2020s, AI is used in almost every industry.

The graphic to the right shows some industries which use AI, but by no means all.

Education is one that is not mentioned, but AI is used in educational tools such as Duolingo, Grammarly etc.

Can you think of any other AI tools which can be used in education?

ETHICAL ISSUES WITH AI

Using AI also presents ethical challenges.

AI systems use historical data to learn, and historical data has a lot of human biases in it, which can lead to biased and discriminatory AI tools.

Privacy is a big concern and AI tools require access
to massive amounts of data, regularly personal in
nature.

The last concern we will discuss is job automation or
the potential for certain jobs to be done by AI
instead of humans.

RESPONSIBLE AI

Lots of organisations are pushing to create
responsible AI principles to tackle the issues on the
previous slide.

Transparency is key, meaning that users should
understand how and why AI makes the decisions it
does.

Ensuring privacy will help to protect users' data
collected and analysed by AI.

Lastly, efforts should be made to retrain workers whose jobs could be automated by AI.
