Planting Tulips
1 [Setting: Two houses on a street. Lucy is playing hopscotch on the
sidewalk in front of her house. Nita walks out of the house next door
with Mrs. Lopez, her grandmother.]
2 NITA: Hi, Lucy! My grandma is going to teach me how to plant
tulips. Want to learn, too?
3 LUCY: No thanks. I’m going to watch TV.
4 [Lucy runs stage left and inside her house. Mrs. Monroe is standing
by the door. It is obvious she was listening, and she looks unhappy.]
5 MRS. MONROE: Why don’t you want to learn how to plant tulips?
6 LUCY: I’d rather watch TV.
7 MRS. MONROE: You watch too much TV. That’s so nice of Mrs.
Lopez to offer to teach you to garden. You should go back over there.
8 LUCY: [Whining.] But Mom . . .
9 MRS. MONROE: Go!
10 [Lucy runs through the door and then stage right. She goes around
the fence to where Nita and Mrs. Lopez are kneeling on the ground.]
11 LUCY: [Pouting.] My mom says I should learn how to garden.
12 MRS. LOPEZ: [Smiling.] I would love to teach you, Lucy! Just
grab that trowel and dig a small hole in the dirt. Make sure you dig
down about six inches.

13 [Lucy frowns before grabbing a trowel and kneeling on the ground
next to Nita. She digs a hole.]
14 MRS. LOPEZ: That looks great! Now drop the bulb in the hole and
cover it up with dirt, like this. Next, water the bulb.
15 [Mrs. Lopez demonstrates for the girls, and then Lucy and Nita
happily follow her lead.]
16 LUCY: [Standing and brushing dirt off of her hands.] That was
really fun! I can’t wait to see the garden.
17 NITA: When will the flowers bloom?
18 MRS. LOPEZ: The tulips won’t actually grow until next spring. We
plant the bulbs in the fall because they will grow better if they are in the
ground all winter.
19 NITA: [Looking sad.] Oh, I thought we’d get to see them right
away.
20 [A clap of thunder sounds. Nita, Lucy, and Mrs. Lopez are startled
and look up.]
21 NITA: [Alarmed.] Grandma! Our tulips!
22 MRS. LOPEZ: They’ll be okay. The rain will help them grow, and
next spring we’ll have a beautiful garden!
23 LUCY: Thanks for showing me how to plant tulips, Mrs. Lopez.
This was way more fun than watching TV.
24 MRS. LOPEZ: I’m glad you joined us, Lucy. But remember, our
work isn’t over. In the spring, we’re going to have to take care of the
tulips so they grow to be as healthy and pretty as possible.
25 LUCY: [Excited.] I can’t wait! Maybe I can pick some as a present
for my mom.
26 [It starts to rain, and they run toward the Lopez house.]
27 [The stage lights go down.]
