MODELO:
Greetings! My name is Irma Rameizl. This year I am teaching 6th and 7th grade Spanish at HHIMS. I have been teaching since 1997, so 28 years in total. I started teaching Spanish at Hudde Junior HS in Brooklyn NY in 1997. And I worked there for four years. Then I moved South to Hilton Head Island in 2001, and started teaching at HHIMS. This will be the start of my 24th year at HHIMS. I am looking forward to collaborating with my colleagues across BCSD. I am also excited to teach reading, writing, listening, and speaking to my Middle Schoolers. In addition, I am looking forward to organizing the Saint Augustine Field trip for my students. Over the Summer, I organized my home, and I worked in the garden. I also started going to church again, which was important to me.
Greetings! My name is Lester Lara. This year will make 24 years of teaching in BCSD. I currently teach Spanish at HE McCracken Middle School. I have also have taught ESOL the first seven years of my career. My teaching experiences have taken me to teach at Hilton Head High, Bluffton High, ACE, and now McCracken. I love to travel around the world. As a child born in Chile, married to a Costa Rican, and a former Beaufort County Alumni who graduated in Hilton Head High in 1993, I am also looking forward to continue to teach our local childrentand bring the best what BCSD can offer.

IB Skills: Approaches to Learning
The International Baccalaureate's (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) uses a framework called Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills to help students learn how to learn. These skills are categorized into ten clusters that are developmentally appropriate and include. It is recommended to focus on one or two skills per unit.
Thinking skills
Research skills
Communication skills
Self-management skills
Social skills
Accessing information
Making connections between information sources
Understanding sensory learning preferences
14
Poll
Which IB 'Approaches to Learning' skill do you think that your students struggle with the most?
Thinking skills
Research skills
Accessing information
Self-Management skills
Social skills
15
Fill in the Blank
Srta. Irma was delighted to observe that her students were working great together as they created a poster to summarize the main points of a chapter in a book that they were reading. Which approach to learning most stands out in your mind when you think of the students cooperating to create an output: Research skills or Social skills?
16
Approaches to Learning: language, Interaction, Collaboration, media literacy, organizational skills, afFective skills & Social Skills
17
Approaches to learning: Interaction
"I can exchange thoughts, information and messages effectively through interaction".
Let's reflect on the past school year, what are some ways that you felt were effective in getting the students to interact?
Example (Irma) : Personally, I believe that clear modeling and practice were important. For speaking, Vocaroo (https://vocaroo.com/ )was a good tool because the students were able to record their voices easily and turn in the link on Google Classroom.
Also, the students loved group projects.
18
Examples of vocaroos from 7th graders (Spanish class) that was used to record practicing a skill.
What are some benefits of using a vocaroo? (Turn and talk)
Sentence stems makes the assignment quick and focused. They are good to keep the students on task. You can make them more higher-order by varying the questioning. For example, I could add on ¿Por qué ? Why?
19
Approaches to Learning: Language
"I can read, write, and use language to communicate information effectively".
Some reading resources that we have are:
Scholastic magazines: ¿Qué Tal? (Spanish) Scholastic has Spanish books too.
Google forms: (Grades the quizzes, gives feedback/ share with other teachers)
Gimkit: You can assign practice links and individual (solo) play links: Example: https://www.gimkit.com/practice/662ad8440a29145712e9df65
Quizziz ( school has a professional account): Pick magazine articles from ¿Qué Tal? (Spanish) and create your quizziz. Example: https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/64a759a1f492e6001d322cff?section=collections&searchLocale=
Textbooks: Example: Calle de la Lectura, 6.1.6.2
Kahoot, Quizlet live
Donor's Choose: Remember to fill in the request form with your school's bookkeeper first. https://www.donorschoose.org/

Approaches to Learning: Language: Writing
(Language skill: Writing)
What are some engaging projects that you did last year with writing?
Group discussion: 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade (3-5 mins)
Letter/Una carta: 6th grade
Unit/Unidad: Introduction/La introducción
Canva Presentations allow you to record over the writing, and share it.
(To record click on Upload, then share).

NB: The students write a rough draft in their note book which we peer edit, and give teacher feedback too.
21
Writing: Storyboards
& Google Drawings
Website: https://www.storyboardthat.com/
This is a fun cartoon making website that many students enjoyed.
Always give the students the option to work on paper too!
Remember to model how to use the website.
You can also paste the cartoons into a Google Slides and create a cover slide.
More examples are in Rubicon (Introducciones/Introductions)
Can be used for any topic.

Google Drawings
Another useful web application is Google Drawings.https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1P3Ez0f_q_6sVpP59PKwq8MCy7aRmUViEEATCL-sgyWE/edit
Google drawings is a fun application that is quick and easy to use. Here is a example of a conversation that I made as an example for my 6th graders.
