Past tense is a verb tense used to describe actions

or events that occurred in the past.

This form is used
for

actions

that

happened

at

a

specific time in the
past.

Simple Past

This form describes
actions that were
ongoing

at

a

particular time in
the past.

Past Continuous

This form is used for
actions

that

were

completed

before

another action in the
past.

Past Perfect

This form describes
actions

that

were

ongoing in the past
up to another point in
the past.

Introduction

Examples

Simple Past

Add "-ed" to the base form (e.g., "walk" becomes "walked").
Regular verbs :

Have unique past forms (e.g., "go" becomes "went").
Irregular verbs :

"She walked to the store.”

"They ate dinner at 7 PM.”

Past Continuous

It is formed with "was/were" + present participle
(verb + "-ing")

"I was reading a book when she called.”

"They were playing soccer all afternoon.”

Past Perfect

It is formed with "had" + past participle.

"By the time we arrived, the movie had already
started.”

"She had finished her homework before dinner.”

Past Perfect Continuous

It is formed with "had been" + present participle.

"He had been working there for five years when
he got promoted.”

"They had been living in the city before they
moved to the countryside.”
