Warm Up:
Find the x- and y-intercept for 3𝑥 − 4𝑦 = 24

Write the equation of a line in slope intercept form that is
parallel to 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 4 and passes through (0, 9).

SLOPE = …

NOTES

To find the slope of a line:

1.Count the change in the y coordinates (use EXACT points)

a.This is the up/down movement
b.Up is positive, down is negative

2.Count the change in the x coordinates

a.This is the left/right movement
b.Right is positive, left is negative

Vocabulary alert!!

To find the slope between two points algebraically:

1.Substitute the x and y coordinates into the formula

a.First, choose which ordered pair is the 1st and which is the 2nd
b.Either choice will be fine!

2.Simplify the ratio

a.Careful with your negatives
b.Be willing to keep fraction!

Steps for graphing a linear function:

1.Plot point
2.Step off slope from graphed point
3.Repeat step 2 until line is all the way across as well as up and down

Find the slope and y-intercept of the linear equations below, then graph.
