People have chased the idea of happiness for centuries but what influences happiness is often unclear.
Happiness: A state of wellbeing that encompasses a deep and meaningful satisfaction with life
Happiness is a feeling, an immediate experience, not a cognitive construct. It is based on activity in the brain’s neurobiological reward and motivation systems, which have been retained in evolution.

▪Ed Diener (Dr Happiness) developed a model of subjective wellbeing
▪His research looked into two different areas
Life satisfaction:
•How a person evaluates their fulfilment within specific areas of their
life
Affective balance:
•The moods, emotions and feelings that a person experiences.
▪He also suggested that people can look at their leves from a top-down or bottom-up

Unlike traditional views in psychology which focus on negative
emotions and how these shape someones wellbeing this theory
developed by Barbara Frederickson, looks at how positive emotions also
have benefits on wellbeing that need to be considered.
The influence of negative emotions:
These can narrow one’s focus and have subsequent actions that
perhaps were once useful in a survival situation but not so useful now.
Positive emotions on the other hand are likely to broaden a person’s
focus and encourage them to pursue and explore things they have
associated positively with.
THE BROADEN AND BUILD
THEORY OF EMOTION
21
The Broaden-and-Build theory has highlighted that
positive emotions have benefits to achieving ‘optimal
wellbeing’
▪A broadened mind has long term adaptive benefits and can lead to
building enduring physical and emotional resources
▪Juvenile play sets a child up for adulthood. Play turns into social
support that can then become intellectual support.
▪Interest leads to exploration which creates knowledge and develops
intellectual complexity
