Shapes of Signs

The State of Georgia uses seven basic shapes of signs to convey traffic control instructions. Drivers should know signs by their shapes and colors so that they may recognize them from a distance and begin reacting timely and appropriately.

​Shapes of Signs

These signs are generally used for regulatory signs which tell you what you must do. You must obey them in the same manner as traffic laws

​​Vertical Rectangle

​These signs are generally used as guide signs. They show locations, directions, or other special information.

​​Horizontal Rectangle

​These signs always mean stop. You must make a complete stop at the marked line.

​​Octagon

​This shape always means yield. You must slow down to a safe and reasonable speed and stop if necessary.

​​Triangle

​This shape warns of existing or possible hazards on roadways or adjacent areas.

​​Diamond

​This shape tells you that you are approaching a railroad crossings

​​Round

​This shape means you are approaching a school zone or school crossing

Traffic signs use different colors to convey specific types of information quickly and clearly to drivers. The color of a traffic sign provides a universal code that helps drivers understand its purpose, even before they can read any text or symbols on it.
