Botoșani is the county seat of the county with the same name, located in Moldova, Romania. It is situated in the Jijia Plain, at an altitude of 170 meters above sea level. The city covers an area of 41 square kilometers. The population is 90,010 inhabitants, as determined on December 1, 2021.
3
The origin of the name Botoșani is quite uncertain, but the following explanations are possible: the first is that the city takes its name from a boyar named Botaș, who lived in this area at the beginning of the second millennium. The name of the "Botaș" or "Botășani" family is mentioned in very old documents from 1439.
4
The territory of the city itself covers an area of 4,132 hectares and has a slightly elongated shape in the north-south direction. The average altitude of the city is 163 meters, with elevations rarely exceeding 200 meters in the western part. The characteristic feature of this region is the low hills or hilly plains, developed on monocline deposits (gently inclined towards the southeast), with gentle slopes, very wide valleys, plateau-like interfluves, and low relief energy, averaging 30-40 meters.
